Experience a Three Night Adventure During MOSTHistory’s Summer Nights at the Museum

Summer event series to be held at 6:30 p.m. on June 13, July 11 and August 8, 2013
The Museum of South Texas History announces their third annual Summer Nights at the Museum will be held this year at 6:30 p.m. on June 13, July 11 and August 8. During the indoor three night event series the museum’s signature exhibition, Rio Grande Legacy, will come to life section by section, providing three different adventures in time for the whole family, a group outing or even a date night.

“Sweet Dreams of the River Frontier”

Each Summer Night will promptly kick off at 6:30 p.m. with a puppet show — popcorn included — that ties in to the spotlighted exhibition section. Guests will want to ensure they arrive early to get their snack before show time. Following the puppet show, children will receive a game card to begin playing FIND ME IF YOU CAN, a quest to find the character, artifact or image that inspired the puppet characters. Once completed, the game card can be entered into a drawing for a prize to be awarded at the end of each night. If the children play the game each month, they will not only have three chances to win but also a chance to win a grand prize at the conclusion of Summer Nights at the Museum.

Nighttime at the Museum

When the sun goes down, the museum will come to life. While children are on their quest, that evening’s spotlighted exhibition section will come alive through costumed interpreters talking about and demonstrating their everyday life. For “kids” of all ages there will be many hands-on activities including flintknapping, La Tortillera and, back by popular demand, Atlatl target practice. One of the new activities this year, “Digging Up History,” is sure to bring out the inner archaeologist in everyone. Be sure to attend the entire Summer Nights series as each one is a different adventure.

The Edinburg Children’s Hospital’s will host its first-ever “Teddy Bear Clinic,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of the Community-wide Health Fair on Aug. 3.

At the “Teddy Bear Clinic,” children are encouraged to bring in their favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal and nurse volunteers will give it a check-up.

The Community-wide Health Fair is hosted by the Hidalgo Starr Counties Medical Alliance and co-sponsored by South Texas Health System and the Valley Care Clinics.

The health fair will take place 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 3 at Edinburg Regional Medical Center, 1102 W. Trenton Rd.

At the “Teddy Bear Clinic,” your child’s stuffed animal may get some stitches, a shot, a bandage, or an X-ray. Each stuffed animal will be weighed, measured and have their blood pressure taken, too. And after it’s all done, each furry friend will receive a certificate of good health to take home.
“The clinic teaches children that doctors and nurses are friends and are here to help them feel better. The Teddy Bear Clinic will also expose children to the many departments of a hospital and let them know what to expect if they ever have to come to one,” said Jennifer Garza, CEO of Edinburg Regional Medical Center and Edinburg Children’s Hospital.
“Preparing for a procedure or doctor’s visit through medical play is highly beneficial to children. Listening to concerns, easing their fears, and giving them some control by acting as a parent to their stuffed animal are our goals with this Teddy Bear Clinic.”
In addition to the Teddy Bear Clinic, the Community-wide Health Fair will feature a wide variety of free health information, vision screenings, and activities for the whole family. 8/3 - RGV's "Big Latch On" and Celebration of World Breastfeeding Week - Brownsville

Saturday, Aug. 3 at Brownsville Children's Museum from 9:30am to 1pm to raise awareness about the health benefits of breastfeeding for mom, child and family.

As part of the Big Latch On, groups of breastfeeding women coming together at registered locations around the world to all latch on their child at a set time. All the breastfeeding women and children are latched on for one minute at the set time and are counted by the witnesses. The numbers are added up and we see if we can beat previous Big Latch On records or maybe even the world record.

Goals:
Support for communities to identify and grow opportunities to provide ongoing breastfeeding support and promotion.
Raise awareness of breastfeeding support and knowledge available in communities.
Help communities positively support breastfeeding in public places.
Make breastfeeding a normal part of the day-to-day life at a local community level.
Increase support for women who breastfeed - women are supported by their partners, family and the breastfeeding knowledge that is embedded in their communities.
Communities have the resources to advocate for coordinated appropriate and accessible breastfeeding support services.

The National Butterfly Center is pleased to offer five weeks of Project WILD^TM certified environmental and life science education to children ages 6 - 14. Programs will be limited to 40 children per session.

Children age 6- 10 will be introduced to native plants and wildlife, including insects, reptiles, mammals and birds, in our Winged Wonders program. They will learn about life cycles, climate change, the importance of habitat and more, through outdoor adventures and arts & crafts activites.

Youth age 11 - 14 will engage in hands-on projects, such as landscaping, and build features that enhance the property for people and animals. They will also learn wilderness and other skills that come in handy for outdoor exploration, wildlife identification and environmental conservation, through our Working Wonders program.

All participants who complete a summer session will receive a complimentary Individual Membership good for one year of FREE admission to the National Butterfly Center.

Discover Bentsen-RGV State Park with a Naturalist as your guide. See the various nature attractions of the park & search for wildlife in one of the few remaining woodlands along the Rio Grande.

Fridays
Fridays on Foot! – 6:30–8:00p
Take a late afternoon nature walk around the park headquarters and beyond with a Naturalist as your guide. This is a great way to learn about nature and see local wildlife in their natural habitats.

Saturdays
Creatures of the Night 8:00–10:00p
Explore Bentsen after dark in search of nocturnal wildlife or scan the skies for planets and constellations. Limit 20 participants. Pre-registration required.

Sundays
Bird Walk 8:30-10:30a
Bentsen is a top destination for birdwatchers. This guided tour is a great way to see south Texas specialty birds such as Altamira Oriole, Green Jay, Chachalaca & Great Kiskadee.

Special Family Event: 7th Annual Perseid Party
Saturday, August 10, 2013 from 8:00 pm-12:00 midnight
It's the Perseid Party at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park! This annual event features live animals, nature-themed family activities, stargazing, food vendors & live entertainment during the week of the Perseid Meteor Shower. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Admission is only $5! FREE for children 12 and under!

The park is under currently under a county-wide burn ban. No ash producing fires, of any kind, are allowed. Containerized fuel stoves are currently allowed for cooking only.

6/11-8/9 - Summer Nature Discovery Camps for Kids - McAllen

"Quinta Mazatlan is offering eight unique week-long summer nature discovery camps that combine indoor and outdoor adventure, games, wildlife exploration, science and art!"

Each summer camp goes from Tuesday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with breakfast and lunch provided.

Note:	Bring a light snack, reusable water bottle, bug spray, hat and sunscreen. Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.
