5/3-5 - Cinco de Mayo Weekend Celebration - Edinburg
festivities promise to be a fun cultural celebration full of activities designed for the whole family in mind. The three day event is free of charge and happens Friday, May 3rd through Sunday, May 5th.
The celebration will feature more than 50 artisans from various regions in Mexico who will be selling handmade and unique products including pottery, art, textiles, candies and much more.
Cinco de Mayo weekend kicks off Friday, May 3rd at 3:00 pm with the Artisan Fair and music performance by two of the best local trios from South Texas, Trio “Guitarras de Oro” and Efrain Soto’s “Trio Guitarras”. The trios will be playing traditional Mexican songs we’ve come to love and enjoy so much. The grand finale will be a special presentation by “Grupo Jarochos del Valle”, a five man musical group that plays traditional music from the state of Veracruz, including “The Bamba”.
Also, stop by the Cinco de Mayo Poster Exhibition presented by the University of Texas-Pan American graphics class.
Saturday, May 4th, the festivities continue with the Mexican artisans and an array of wonderful activities. Come and enjoy a Mariachi & Folkorico Dance Team Exhibition featuring a special performance by Edinburg’s Parks & Recreation International Award Winning Folkloric Dance Group along with local mariachis and other folkloric groups. Also, don’t forget to stop by the Salsa Tasting booth and cast your vote for your favorite salsa. There is still time to sign up; all that we ask is that you prepare at least one gallon of salsa, plus provide tortilla chips for the tasters. The salsa will be judged in the Sweet, Savory and Hot category. The winners will be announced at 5:45 pm that same day.
The evening hours will be filled with the music of various Regional Mexican Bands including Grupo International Constelacion, Banda Norteña Rivales Alterados and Daniel Tijerina, El Diamante de la Banda.
Closing the festivities Sunday, May 5th will be Edinburg’s Raul and Rosie Lopez & Bohemian Friends. Raul and Rosie are proud owners of La Rose boutique and gift shop and are wellknown within the Edinburg community for their love of music and bohemian nights with friends. They have performed in front of small and large audiences in the Valley and as far away as Las Vegas.
