The public is welcome to an Armed Forces Day celebration fun trail run (no time/no awards) on Sat., May 18, in Mission, TX, as we bring together the community to honor active duty military personnel around the world with veterans and community members in a fun TRAIL and road run for novice runners and veteran runners.

We're bringing together folks from Team Rubicon and Team RWB to Run As One!

The Rio Grande Valley of deep South Texas has tons of folks on active duty, reserves, and veterans and we'd like ...to bring EVERYONE together to celebrate. (If you're on active duty or you're a veteran, you can sign up for a free workout t-shirt from Team RWB (red-white-and-blue) at http://teamrwb.org/get-involved/join-the-team but if you're not a veteran, YOU CAN STILL SIGN UP as a supporter and purchase a t-shirt! All are welcome.

Handcyclists welcome! Older kids--able to run along--are welcome as well. Baby strollers welcome on road.

We welcome donations of refreshments and food afterwards.

What to wear: Your Team RWB t-shirt or anything in support of the troops.

What to bring: bug spray; sun block--as needed.

Tips: Carry a "hand-held" bottle of sports drink or water. (Tip: Hydrate all day before; drink only when thirsty during run. No bathrooms); eat a bagel, or oatmeal, PB&J, etc. beforehand; use Gu-brand or Honey Stinger or Cliff Shot Blocks or Jelly Belly Extreme Sport Beans, etc., for electrolyte and energy kick. Water and chips or bananas or oranges, etc., for afterwards. You can find these products at Valley Running Co. (Dove Ave., McAllen) or Academy, etc.

Mission Hike & Bike Trails, a.k.a. Mission Nature Trails are located about half a mile south of Exp. 83 on Conway (Hwy. 107) in Mission.

Author Don Clifford will visit the Weslaco museum on Saturday, May 18th to read from his book, Zoo Nonsense, and talk about it.

The event will be held at the museum's art gallery from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. and is free to the public.

5/18 - Flash Dash 5K Run/Walk, 1 Mile Fun Run, and Baby Dash - Edinburg

Dress up in your favorite hero outfit or tee and get ready to have fun. There will be a 100 meter baby dash for kids 5 and under, a 1 mile run/walk for ages 7 and older, and a 5K run/walk for ages 7 and older.

All participants will have the opportunity to win an overall male or female trophy for each event and top 3 in each category will receive custom medals. Tshirts will be given out and custom bibs to keepsake.

100% of the proceeds go towards VBS this summer at Templo El Divino Salvador.

Come have fun with your entire family and friends. Bring all your cute baby siblings, relatives, kids, and friends out for the 100meter baby dash in cute hero outfits or tees.

Spread the fun and deck out your car with the words "I'm going to flash dash 5-18-13" or any other cool deco for the event, take a photo, and post it on our facebook page for chance to win a family prize pack. The first annual Walk/Run for MS is a 5k run or 1 mile walk to benefit Multiple sclerosis or MS.

5/11 - Walk-N-Rolla 5K / Bike Race / Mutt Strutt / Health Fair - Edinburg




The HCMPO will donate all proceeds of the Walk-N-Rolla event to the South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association (STJDA) to help valley children and families get in contact with support systems and advocacy group, as well as receive medication and treatment.

Our Walk –N –Rolla will include a single and family friendly 5K run, bicycle race, “Mutt Strutt” (dog walk,) and health fair. We will have sponsors providing health screenings, bicycle safety and maintenance clinics, and passing out information to promote their services and products.

Weslaco Chamber presents the Weslaco 5K. Run through the Weslaco Air strip at the Weslaco Airport! A 5K Run/Walk that is for the whole family. 
 
There will also be a 1 Mile kids run. 

5K is $20 for advance registration until April 24th. Registration after April 24th or at the event will be $25. Children's one-mile run will be $10.

Awards will be presented to the top three male and female 5K finishers in the following categories:
19-under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50+.

All children partipating in the Kid's 1K Fun Run will receive a medal.

 T-Shirts guaranteed to the first 300 5K registrants.

5/4 - "Swing into Literacy" Symphony in the Park - Brownsville


Brownsville Literacy Center’s 15th Annual Symphony in the Park will be held on Saturday, May 4 at Washington Park. The gate opens at 5 p.m. to “Swing into Literacy,” the theme for this year’s exciting family fun event featuring the Dean Canty Big Band.

Before the orchestra takes the stage, the audience will enjoy performances by youngsters in the B-SMART Orchestra and the UTB/TSC Music Academy. Also taking the stage will be the Taffelmusik Quartet, an ensemble of university students; and the Los Fresnos High School Jazz Band will keep the music alive during intermission with some snappy selections.

Continuing its popularity with parents and children, Symphony will again include Play Day at Symphony under the direction of Dr. Georgianna Duarte and her UTB and TSC early childhood studies students. The Boogie Woogie auction will be open throughout the evening, giving everyone time to peruse the tempting selections.

The evening’s entertainment lineup is as follows:
5:30 – 6:30 B-SMART Orchestra and UTB Music Academy Students
6:30 – 7:00 Taffelmusik Quartet
7:00 – 8:00 Dean Canty Big Band
8:00 – 8:30 Los Fresnos High School Jazz Band

Concertgoers are encouraged to arrive early to set up their blankets, lawn chairs and picnics. Light snacks and cold drinks will be available for purchase throughout the evening.

Ticket prices are: children three and under, free; ages 4-12, $4; ages 13 and above, $8; VIP, $50. Seniors 65 and above receive a $2 discount.

Symphony in the Park benefits Brownsville Literacy Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving reading and writing competency in our area through appropriate and accessible educational programs. All funds raised from Symphony will help support BLC’s programs such as English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) and the Family Literacy Program for preschool-age children and their parents. Since 1986, BLC’s mission has remained the same: To promote literacy and provide families in the Brownsville community the opportunity to succeed.

5/3-5 - Cinco de Mayo Weekend Celebration - Edinburg


festivities promise to be a fun cultural celebration full of activities designed for the whole family in mind. The three day event is free of charge and happens Friday, May 3rd through Sunday, May 5th.

The celebration will feature more than 50 artisans from various regions in Mexico who will be selling handmade and unique products including pottery, art, textiles, candies and much more.

Cinco de Mayo weekend kicks off Friday, May 3rd at 3:00 pm with the Artisan Fair and music performance by two of the best local trios from South Texas, Trio “Guitarras de Oro” and Efrain Soto’s “Trio Guitarras”. The trios will be playing traditional Mexican songs we’ve come to love and enjoy so much. The grand finale will be a special presentation by “Grupo Jarochos del Valle”, a five man musical group that plays traditional music from the state of Veracruz, including “The Bamba”.

Also, stop by the Cinco de Mayo Poster Exhibition presented by the University of Texas-Pan American graphics class.

Saturday, May 4th, the festivities continue with the Mexican artisans and an array of wonderful activities. Come and enjoy a Mariachi & Folkorico Dance Team Exhibition featuring a special performance by Edinburg’s Parks & Recreation International Award Winning Folkloric Dance Group along with local mariachis and other folkloric groups. Also, don’t forget to stop by the Salsa Tasting booth and cast your vote for your favorite salsa. There is still time to sign up; all that we ask is that you prepare at least one gallon of salsa, plus provide tortilla chips for the tasters. The salsa will be judged in the Sweet, Savory and Hot category. The winners will be announced at 5:45 pm that same day.

The evening hours will be filled with the music of various Regional Mexican Bands including Grupo International Constelacion, Banda Norteña Rivales Alterados and Daniel Tijerina, El Diamante de la Banda.

Closing the festivities Sunday, May 5th will be Edinburg’s Raul and Rosie Lopez & Bohemian Friends. Raul and Rosie are proud owners of La Rose boutique and gift shop and are wellknown within the Edinburg community for their love of music and bohemian nights with friends. They have performed in front of small and large audiences in the Valley and as far away as Las Vegas.

UTPA–Theatre for Young Audiences presents Mariachi Girl by Roxanne Shroeder-Arce.
Mariachi Girl tells the story of Carmencita, an 8-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a mariachi.
Her father Luis, on the other hand, is much attached to his family’s mariachi traditions and roots and does not approve of women being part of a mariachi group.
It will run May 2-4 at 7 p.m., May 4 and 5 at 2 p.m. at the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre at the Arts and Humanities (ARHU) Building on the corner of University Drive and Sugar Road (formally the Communication Arts and Sciences (COAS) Building).

Children of all ages are welcome to attend.

General admission is $3 per person regardless of age. The box office opens one hour prior to each performance.
