6/29 - Watermelon Festival - Alamo

The City of Alamo Event & Beautification Committee is planning its Inaugural Watermelon Festival to be held on Saturday, June 29, from 11am to 7pm in Alamo’s Downtown Main Street Central Park Square located in the heart of Alamo on Business 83 between 9th Street and 7th Place.
Alamo’s Central Park Square will be filled with all sorts of watermelon contests and activities including kiddy rides, a carshow, a beer garden, food and vendor booths as well as live entertainment on our newly constructed Central Park Stage. A formal dignitary ribbon cutting ceremony will kick off the event and inaugurate Alamo’s new outdoor stage.

An events committee has been planning the event, set for June 29, which will include a morning 5k run, a carnival, vendors, a car show and watermelon eating, seed-spitting, throwing and rolling contests.

It will also include a dedication of the stage mid-morning and music all afternoon and evening on it with a headliner show by Lubbock-based conjunto band The Hometown Boys.

Project Insight Youth Camp is a day camp held from June 24-28, 2012 at El Rocio Retreat for youth ages 10-15 yrs. Breakfast, lunch and all art supplies are included.
Professional presenters come to present a variety of activities including naturalists for birding, licensed massage therapist teaches hand massaging to the campers to go to the local Alzheimer's facility to offer the residents hand massage for community credit, artists, local KRGV weatherman teaches the science, etc.

6/24-28 - Summer Choir Camp - McAllen

The first annual Summer Choir Camp will be offered by colibrí children’s choir from Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28. It will meet at the McAllen Creative Incubator, 601 N. Main St. (the old McAllen library). Singers in grades 4 though 9 may join either one of two sessions: 9:00 AM to noon or 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

The camp will consist of choral rehearsals, musicianship classes, and singing and games. The choir will learn several songs for a final concert at the end of Friday’s session. The students will develop their singing voices and music reading skills. Certified, professional music teachers and choir directors will teach the classes. Students will be given a small snack each day and a camp t-shirt.

Tuition is $125.00 for either the morning or the afternoon session. (Non-refundable $25 deposit is due with the registration form. Remainder is due by Monday, June 10)

The first annual McAllen Mini Maker Faire is scheduled for Saturday, June 22, 2013 on the McAllen Creative Incubator.

The Call for Makers, Performers and Crafters is open now through May 20, 2013. Any groups or individuals interested in participating in this inaugural event should complete the simple application at mcallenmakerfaire.com by application deadline.

Maker Faire began in 2005 in San Mateo, CA by the people behind MAKE and CRAFT magazines. The McAllen Mini Maker Faire takes after its parent event, Maker Faire, which hosts 90,000 visitors in San Mateo in May. Founded ten years ago by the Surfrider Foundation and Surfing Magazine, International Surfing Day (ISD) unites surfers from around the world in celebration of the sport of surfing. Blues on the Hill is an annual concert series that features national and international Blues Music Artists. The event has been a family oriented cultural event in Harlingen for the last 12 years. Blues on the Hill is FREE to the public.  
Blues on the Hill is held at McKelvey Park in Harlingen, Texas. McKelvey Park is located at 1325 S. 77 Sunshine Strip, across the street from the Valley Morning Star. Occasionally events will be held at Lon. C Hill park in Harlingen, Texas.
 
In the event of inclement weather, Blues on the Hill will relocate to the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium at 1204 Fair Park Blvd. Seating is limited; approximately 1,500 seat capacity.
Food vendors are always on site selling BBQ, Fajitas, Hot Dogs, Nachos, funnel cakes, cotton candy, kettle corn, tacos, etc. Bottled water, sodas and beer are also available.
These concessions finance future shows. No outside food and beverages are permitted.

Angels of Love will be hosting this one of a kind Event on Saturday June 15, 2013 at the Pharr Events Center.


This new and unique event is being held to raise funds to open an Emergency Shelter for Abused and Neglected children of the Rio Grande Valley.

The RGV Cheer & Dance Clinic will be a fun and energetic dance and cheer program offering local kids the opportunity to learn from, the most renowned cheerleading squad ever - The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders!

The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader Cheer & Dance program focuses on having fun while learning exciting choreography and dancing routines with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Participants, ages 5 through 18 years old, will learn a cheer, a dance routine, team spirit with emphasis on self-confidence, and be able to show off their newly learned routine to the Clinic spectators. There will also be a question and answer session where the participants can ask questions of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders will take a group photo with the participants. Individual photos as time allows.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Clinic will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 from 8 am to 11:00 am for ages 5-12 and from 12:00 to 3:00 pm for ages 13 and up. The Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library began registering for its Summer Reading Program today. The five week program is free of charge and will be open to children ages 18 months to 17 years of age. This years Summer Reading Program will run June 7th to July 12th and is based on an “underground” theme. Participants will take part in learning about science and technology and will participate in arts and crafts and culinary classes.

The public is invited to kick off the program on Friday June 7th at 6:30 p.m. with a magic show by comedian, magician and illusionist John O’Bryant.

“Our goal is to encourage children and teens of all ages to continue reading throughout the summer in order for them to preserve and increase the reading skills they have attained throughout the school year,” says Library Director, Letty Leija.

6/7 - Mariachi Spectacular - McAllen

The McAllen High Mariachis will play host to the 5th Annual McHi Mariachi Spectacular at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7 at the Rowe High auditorium (2101 N. Ware Rd.). The concert will also feature the UT-Pan American Mariachi Aztlán and the Grammy Award Nominated Mariachi Los Arrieros del Valle. This exciting, two-and-a-half hour show is a great way to kick off the summer.

Tickets are $10 and the proceeds will benefit the McHi Mariachi Oro in its quest to record their second CD and to be able to attend conferences and events next year. 6/3 - Brownsville Public Library Summer Reading Program Registration Opens

KIDS SUMMER READING PROGRAM REGISTRATION:
Registration begins June 3, 2013 for both the 2013 Texas Reading Club and Fourth Annual Youth Photography Contest
Registration may be done at the Children’s Department at either library.

At the time of registration, children will be asked to present their own library card, as it is required in order to participate in the Summer Reading Program. In return, all children will receive a title log to keep track of the twenty books they are required to read during the Summer.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:Once the participating child has read the required amount of books and filled out the title log, (s)he must return it to the Children’s Department of the library were the child registered. Along with the title log, one library receipt that demonstrates books were checked out from the library must be turned in. The Children’s Department will begin accepting these title logs beginning June 17, 2013.

In return for completing the program, the participating child will receive a small gift bag, a Certificate of Completion, and a Carnival Button that will allow them FREE entry into the Summer Carnival to be held on July 26, 2013 at the Southmost Branch Library.

Children who complete the program will automatically be entered into a Give-Away!!! Children ages 0-5 will qualify to win a LeapFrog LeapPad, children ages 6-10 will have the chance to win a Nook Tablet, children ages 11-14 will have the chance to win a Kindle Fire and teens ages 15-17 will receive a Dell Laptop. All title logs must be submitted to the Children’s Department by 9:00 pm on July 3, 2013. The winners of this Give-Away will be announced on July 12, 2013 at the Main Branch Library during the Awards Ceremony.

Throughout the month of June, there will be a variety of activities for the whole family to enjoy as described in the calendars to the left and right. All children must be accompanied by an adult when participating in these activities.

Please Note: ONLY 100 CRAFTS will be available for Craft Days. You must obtain a ticket at the Children’s Department. Tickets are given on a first come, first serve basis thirty minutes before the event.

Session II registration will be from June 24 - July 5, 2013

Registration for the exciting recreation programs will be gladly accepted at the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department located on 315 E. Palm Dr., Edinburg, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to
9:00 p.m. or by mailing the registration form(s) and making checks payable to the City of Edinburg Parks &
