Diabetes Walk/Run

A benefit fundraiser for the Rio Grande Valley American Diabetes Association-Cameron County will host a San Benito Diabetes Walk/ Run at Heavin Resaca Trail and a Zumbathon at Kennedy Park. Both facilities are located on the Resaca in San Benito.

Individuals, families and organizations are invited to participate to raise funds for diabetes support and research. Only in its second year of existence, the event raised $14,000 for the RGVDA-CC last year. In its first year, the event contributed $6,000 for the cause. All proceeds remain in Cameron County.

The run and bike tour start at 8 a.m. at Heavin Resaca Trail, and the walk begins at 9 a.m. The Zumbathon is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Kennedy Park. Knowledgeable guest speakers will be on hand to address diabetes-related health topics. Live music, face painting, moon jumps and nutritious snacks and water will also be offered free of charge.

3/18-24 - FESTIBA 2013 - Edinburg

Tackling illiteracy once again takes center stage at The University of Texas-Pan American during its annual Festival of International Books and Arts (FESTIBA) March 18 through March 24.

This year’s theme is “Literacy: Inspiring Healthy Minds & Healthy Bodies.”

Highlights of the week include a faculty art show, a Congressional Roundtable on Hispanic Literacy for librarians hosted by U.S. Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15), a mariachi competition, and a performance featuring internationally recognized music conductor, Alondra de la Parra.

FESTIBA 2013 will also feature several exhibits from leading artists in Mexico, as well as plays and a book festival for young readers. Several authors will actually venture out into the community and visit a half dozen schools to share and sign books with the children.

On March 22, the public is invited to attend the FESTIBA at Jardín del Arte Community Festival from 5 p.m. To 10 p.m. at the Edinburg City Hall Courtyard. The evening of cultural and educational exchange will feature a long list of family-friendly events including a variety of musical performances, children’s activity tents, book distributions and displays, plays and art exhibits. Food and drinks will be available from vendors.

“It is very family oriented. We will promote healthy living and a healthy lifestyle,” Guerra said. “There will be Zumba dancing, food vendors and a variety of artists. It will be a wonderful afternoon about fun with your family but most of all we will be stressing the importance of literacy and reading to your children.”

The week’s activities will end on March 23 with a 6:30 p.m. performance featuring winners of a public school mariachi competition at the UTPA Fieldhouse, followed by a concert at 7 p.m. with the Grammy-nominated Mariachi Sol de Mexico and the UTPA Symphony Orchestra, all led by FESTIBA’s guest conductor de la Parra.

3/9 - Texas Independence Day - San Benito



"Battle skirmishes and reenactments by living historians will culminate with the Battle of the Alamo, Battle of Bexar and finally the final clash, the Battle of San Jacinto. This year, Texas Independence Day celebration will be conducted at the San Benito Fair Grounds on FM 510 and Cesar Gonzalez Parkway from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and continuing from 5-9 p.m. with live music and celebration at the same site.

Events begin with a parade of horseback riders, wagons and other vehicles traveling from Plaza de San Benito at 225 E. Stenger to Sam Houston Blvd, to Business 77 and finally turning on to FM 510 for the final trek to the show grounds and festival site. An official proclamation will be read at 12 noon, recognizing Texas Independence Day.

The first skirmish performed by re-enactors is scheduled at 12:30 a.m., followed at 1 p.m. and again at 3 p.m., and finally with the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico.  
A highlight of the day will be a fundraising benefit drawing for a musket, similar to those used during the era when the Texas battle for independence was waged.

New to the Texas Independence Day celebration is an IBCA sanctioned cook-off. The site features more than 100 acres of space for participating teams of cookers, with hook-ups available. Please call 956-428-6945 for more information. Trophies will be awarded to top cookers.

Also scheduled will be demonstrations of baking pan de campo, quilt-making and other vintage arts. Vendors will be selling period items and refreshments. Food, arts/crafts and corporate vendors are welcome to participate by calling Victor Rosas at 956-367-3448 to register. A beer garden will also be on site with favorite food items to be located nearby. Brisket plates will be available for purchase on the grounds.

A 5-K run will precede events with trophies and t-shirts to be awarded to participants. An art show depicting scenes from the Alamo will be judged with winners to be announced during the day.
In conjunction with the event, an outdoor viewing of the movie, “The Alamo,” with Billy Bob Thornton, is scheduled on March 8 at sundown by Borderland Baptist Church, at the fairgrounds, FM 510 Cesar Gonzalez Parkway.

Admission is free of charge, with a $3 donation for parking.

3/8-17 - Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show - Mercedes


The Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show is one of the largest events held south of San Antonio attracting over 200,000 people annually. More than 400 volunteers put on the Show each year. Approximately 3,000 exhibitors participate.

Since its inception in 1940, the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show has always had youth education in livestock activities as its primary focus. In More recent years, the development of scholarship programs have provided deserving 4-H and FFA Exhibitors from all over Texas with scholarships. 
 
The Livestock Show is a showplace for families to work together, learn together and have fun together. Attractions include nonstop entertainment, a huge parade, rodeos, a fun filled carnival, outstanding livestock exhibits, new and old farm machinery exhibits an over 250 commercial exhibits and food booths.

The Ballet Folklorico’s performance season in the Valley will open on Jan. 31 with an exclusive premiere dinner and show at 6 p.m. at the McAllen Country Club and follow with a premiere viewing of ALEGRIA Temporada 2013 at the McAllen Civic Auditorium. “The race is for everyone and for all ages. It’s a community event that the whole family can enjoy and participate in. You can walk or run. The main thing is to have fun doing it.”

The race is sponsored by STC’s Health & Wellness Center, and includes 15 men’s and women’s divisions from age 10-and-under to 75-and-over.

The pre-registration entry fee is $15 for the general public and $10 for STC affiliates, or $20 the day of the event.

Pre-registered runners can pick up their race packet the day before the event on Friday, March 1 from 2 to 8 p.m. at STC’s Pecan Campus Health & Wellness Center, located at 2515 Pecan Plaza in McAllen.

Race-day registration begins at 6:30 a.m. on March 2, and the race will start at 7:30 a.m.
The top three men’s and women’s finishers in each age division will be given an award. The categories are: 0-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, and 75-plus.
