Starting in the summer of 2013, Quinta Mazatlan will be offering an “Environmental Stewardship Certification” program for High School and College age students. Youth from across the Valley are invited to participate in a six-week course, Tuesdays from 10-1. By the end of the program, they will receive a certificate for 40 hours of community volunteer service, as well as a Certificate of Environmental Stewardship that can boost resumes when applying for jobs, colleges, or scholarships. Volunteer stewardship activities related to each topic follow the workshop training sessions.
Young adult participants will earn a certificate of environmental stewardship that will:
- Certify your knowledge and understanding of Rio Grande Valley Ecology
- Secure 50 hours of volunteer service
- Provide YOU with direct hands-on practice with ways to contribute positively to the health of our environment
- Earn “ambassador” status within participating nature parks and fill your resume for future employment
Week one will cover the “Ecological History of the LRGV”, with emphasis broad-scale ecological changes that have happened over time in the Valley, as well as a closer focus on current issues with invasive species. In week two, participants will learn their native trees and shrubs, and basic plant propagation techniques. Week three will cover soil ecology and the critical role invertebrates play in the ecosystem. A variety of insect-collecting methods will be demonstrated. Week four will cover issues and identification of vertebrates. Week five will focus on water resources and issues in the LRGV. And finally, week six is about PEOPLE—who’s who in the Valley nature community, issues related to urbanization, and the growing “nature deficit disorder” trend.
