7/4 - City of McAllen Independence Day Celebration - McAllen

 

The City of McAllen & its Parks and Recreation Department are planning a day filled with activities to honor America’s independence with the 85th Annual Independence Day Celebration, on July 4, 2013.
The events kick off at 8:00 am with a concert by the McAllen Symphonic Band, at Main and Business 83, to honor current and past members of the nation’s armed services.

The popular Main Street Parade will follow promptly at 9 am on Main Street, between Houston Avenue and Archer Park. The crowd pleasing parade will feature marching bands, colorful floats and entries from local civic and non-profit groups.

After the parade, people of all ages are invited to try their luck at prizes in a Watermelon Seed Spit and Hot Dog Eating Contest, at Archer Park (Main & Business 83, in downtown McAllen). The events are part of Freedom Fest, from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm, which will also include youth games, crafts, rock wall climbing, food booths, music and family fun.

From 1:00 pm to 6:00 p.m., Municipal Pool will be the best place to cool off from the summer heat at a Splash Bash, featuring an array of contests, games, activities and music.

The traditional “Concert in the Sky” fireworks extravaganza lights up the night sky at Municipal Park (Bicentennial Boulevard & Tamarack), at 9 pm. While watching the fireworks, listen to a variety of patriotic music on R Communications radio stations, KJAV 104.9 (Jack FM) and News/Talk 710am KURV.
